Plan in October.
Relax in April.

Tax preparation looks backward. Tax planning looks ahead — while there's still time to change the outcome. We meet before year-end, project your numbers, and give you a short list of moves worth making.

What a planning engagement includes

Tax projection

A projection of this year's federal liability based on year-to-date income, so there are no April surprises.

Estimated payments

Quarterly amounts calculated to meet safe-harbor rules and avoid underpayment penalties.

Retirement contributions

How much a 401(k), SEP-IRA, or solo 401(k) contribution could reduce your tax this year.

Entity review

Whether an S-corporation election makes sense, including the cost of payroll and extra filings.

Timing purchases

Equipment and vehicle purchases, depreciation options, and when it actually pays to buy before December 31.

Life changes

Marriage, a new baby, a home sale, retirement, or a move to Florida from another state.

A note on honesty

We don't sell "tax shelters" or aggressive schemes. Good planning is mostly timing, documentation, and using the rules as written. If something sounds too good to be true, we'll tell you so.

Questions

When is the best time to plan?

September through early December. That leaves time to act on recommendations before year-end. Business owners on our year-round package get a mid-year check-in too.

Do I need to be a current client?

No. Bring last year's return and year-to-date pay stubs or financials, and we'll quote a flat fee for a standalone planning meeting.

Do you give investment advice?

No. We explain the tax effect of decisions; your financial advisor helps you choose investments. We're happy to coordinate with them.

There's still time this year.
